How a visit is checked
- 1NameIs the user-agent a known AI bot — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot…?
- 2Published IP listIs the address inside the company’s own list? 15 lists, refreshed daily.
- 3Reverse DNSFor Google, Bing, Apple, Amazon: does the address resolve to their domain — and back?
Why fake AI bots exist
Anyone can write “GPTBot” or “ClaudeBot” in a user-agent. Scrapers and vulnerability scanners do it all the time, because many websites let AI crawlers through. The name proves nothing; the address does.
How to verify an AI crawler yourself
- Find the bot’s company in the AI bot directory and open its page.
- If the company publishes an IP list (OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google, Microsoft, Apple, DuckDuckGo, Mistral, Common Crawl), the visit’s address must be inside it.
- If it uses reverse DNS (Google, Bing, Apple, Amazon), the address must resolve to the company’s domain, and that name must resolve back to the same address.
- If the company publishes neither, only the name is known. Treat it with care.
